1685-1766 French Jean Marc Nattier Gallery Brother of Jean-Baptiste Nattier. As well as being taught by his father, he trained with his godfather, Jean Jouvenet, and attended the drawing classes of the Academie Royale, where in 1700 he won the Premier Prix de Dessin. From around 1703 he worked on La Galerie du Palais du Luxembourg. The experience of copying the work of Rubens does not, however, seem to have had a liberating effect on his draughtsmanship, which was described by the 18th-century collector Pierre-Jean Mariette as cold. Nattier was commissioned to make further drawings for engravers in the early part of his career, including those after Hyacinthe Rigaud famous state portrait of Louis XIV (1701; Paris, Louvre) in 1710, which indicates that he had established a reputation while he was still quite young. Although he was offered a place at the Academie de France in Rome on the recommendation of Jouvenet, Nattier preferred to remain in Paris and further his career. In 1717 he nevertheless made a trip to Holland, where he painted portraits of Peter the Great and the Empress Catherine (St Petersburg, Hermitage). The Tsar offered Nattier work at the Russian court, but the artist declined the offer. Samuel Palmer
1805-1881 British Samuel Palmer Galleries English painter, draughtsman and etcher. Palmer was a key figure of English Romantic painting who represented, at least in his early work, its pastoral, intuitive and nostalgic aspects at their most intense. He is widely described as a visionary and linked with his friend and mentor William Blake, though he stood at an almost opposite extreme in his commitment to landscape and his innocent approach to its imagery. He had none of Blake irony or complexity and was inspired by a passionate love of nature that found its philosophical dimension in unquestioning Neo-Platonism.

Maria Christina Röhl, född i Stockholm den 26 juli 1801, död i Klara församling, Stockholm den 5 juli 1875, var en svensk porträttmålare som avbildade ett flertal samtida kända personer. Medlem i konstakademien (1843) och hovleverantör. Hennes tavlor hänger bland annat på Nationalmuseum i Stockholm. En samling av 1800 porträtt finns på Kungliga Biblioteket. Maria Röhl växte upp i en rik familj, men då hon blev föräldralös 1822 drabbades hon av fattigdom. Hon tänkte först bli guvernant, men professorn och kopparstickaren Christian Forsell undervisade henne då i teckning; hon hade redan tidigare undervisats av målaren Alexander Hambr??, och fick nu lära sig att utföra snabba och realistiska porträtt i blyerts; hon arbetade i blyerts och krita i svartvitt. Hon bodde hos familjen Forsell, där hon först avbildade familjens vänner och sedan, då det hade blivit modernt att låta avbilda sig av "mamsell Röhl", försörjde hon sig på detta i trettio år. Hon utnämndes till kunglig hovmålare 1843, studerade 1843-1846 under Leon Cogniet vid Franska konstakademien i Paris och hade sedan en atelj?? i Brunkebergs hotell i Stockholm. Fotografikonsten blev en svår konkurrent under hennes sista år. Även systern Eva Röhl (1810-96) uppges ha haft viss konstärlig begåvning.
